Telescope Lenses

The lens of a telescope is one of the most important parts of the entire device.  The primary use of a telescope is to look at, and analyze objects far away and the lens determines the actual magnification.  With a weak, or bad, telescope lens you can find it difficult so see objects regardless of there distance, or lack of distance.

Some people refer to the telescope magnification as its Objektive power but that reference can often be misleading.  Power often can be taken to mean strength and sometimes the magnification of a telescope can be a hindrance rather than strength.  Rather than thinking in terms of power it is often best to think about telescope lenses when thinking about the telescopes focal length.  The focal length is a phrase is often used to refer to the maximum distance objects can be viewed using you’re the telescope.

The telescope lens can usually be replaced by the owner with little or no trouble.  When attempting to replace or change your telescope or Digitalkameras make sure you consult your owner’s manual.  Even if you have owned several telescopes in the past sometimes manufactures make changes that can turn a seemingly easy telescope lens replacement into an absolute nightmare.

There are two reasons why a telescope owner might decide to change their telescope lens.  The first reason is that the lens has some how become damaged.  This damage can come through natural deterioration, dropping the telescope, or accidentally scratching or breaking the telescope lens by other methods.  When the lens is damaged it is much more affordable to purchase and replace the lens than to attempt to replace the entire telescope which is why most telescope manufactures try to make replacing the telescope lens an easy process.

The second reason that someone might want to replace their telescope lens is to increase magnification.  There quite a few lenses available that are designed to increase magnification on an existing telescope so that you do not have to replace your entire telescope in order to get an upgrade and increase focal length.  Often the telescope manufacture will list compatible telescope lens that can be used on their telescopes.

Of course there are times when it may seem as though your lens might be causing problems and hindering your visibility.  There are sometimes bad lenses out there so if at all possible keep more than one replacement lens on hand to avoid inconveniences.  Even new lens can be bad so don’t assume that a brand new lens will work perfectly.  At times the lens is not the problem at all.  There can be outside problems such as poor lighting of the source and the telescope itself might be mounted poorly.

A good way to troubleshoot is to seek advice from those who might have experiences that can help you.  Joining an astrology club is a good way to meet people with experience with various telescopes.  These clubs can help you find what lens produce the best results, which lens cause the most problems, and how to determine if problems you are having are caused by the lens or outside sources.
